Brunch at Sweet Evelyn will have your palette travelling the globe whilst still enjoying your classic breakfast ingredients like eggs and toast. The café is located on Union street in Brunswick and as the name suggests they have some sweet treats up their sleeve that will draw you in. Cherry pie anyone?

When I saw the tom yum omelette on the menu I was intrigued. It tasted like my mind imagined - a Thai inspired omelette with all the accompanying flavours turning it into the flavours we know as tom yum. There was tomato, mushroom, spinach and chilli with coriander and a house made tom yum dressing over the top on a piece of organic sourdough. There was a good amount of flavour not to take away from the omelette itself. Loved it.
Then we went to Mexico with the Huevos Mexicano. It had crispy potato gems with avocado, black beans, jalapenos, montery jack cheese and tomato with fried eggs on top and chipotle mayo. All the ingredients were scattered on the plate with the eggs on top so when you broke into the yolk it acted like a sauce which made it more indulgent.
From the specials menu we tried the walnut ricotta and roasted mushrooms which were amazing. There were big oven baked mushrooms that were juicy and flavoursome, toasted walnuts and creamy garlic ricotta drizzled with truffle oil. It was served on organic sourdough toast with two free range poached eggs and was delightful.
Evelyn’s French toast left us on a sweet note with thick cut brioche bread that was light and fluffy, vanilla mascarpone, colourful seasonal fruit (including passionfruit yum) with berry compote, pistachio crumb and sweet maple syrup over the top.
Last but definitely not least we ended on the gluten free cherry pie. The filling had a really lovely sourness and tart to balance the sweetness and the pastry had a good texture especially considering that it was gluten free. It came with a scoop of ice cream which was the perfect send off and we couldn’t stop singing ‘she’s my cherry pie.’
