If you live near Fitzroy North you probably already know about Maccaroni Osteria Italiana. It’s a great place to bring the family and have a big Italian feast. Their antipasto is next level and they have amazing handmade pastas. So if you’re in the area and want some tasty Italian food, it might be a good idea to stop by.

The antipasto platter was wonderful it had cooked mussels in a Napoli sauce, crispy fried polenta chips, melted cheese fondue, pecorino cheese and quince paste, baked eggplant, sun-dried tomato, marinated olives, bolognese arancini and truffled mushroom croquettes (my fave).

Nothing beats fresh handmade pasta and at Maccaroni Osteria Italiana they make all the pasta in-house. The king prawn linguine was delicious and had big pieces of prawn scattered through.

The gnocchi was soft and pillowy, it was coated in a creamy sauce with salty pancetta and softly bitter radicchio. It was lovely.

The tagliatelle was cooked in napoli sauce and was wrapped in fried eggplant with a few basil leaves on top. This had simple flavours but they worked so well together.

Macaroni Osteria Italiana - mushroom pappardelle

The pappardelle was silky and cooked in a creamy mushroom sauce.

Macaroni Osteria Italiana - pasta bake

The baked pasta had a Bolognese sauce with peas and was baked with fried eggplant and mozzarella. I loved the crispier bits that were in the sides of the dish.

We tried some of the mains and the rabbit casserole was my favourite. It was full of flavour and the meat was tender. The pieces of bread were handy to soak up all of that sauce.

Macaroni Osteria Italiana - pistachio crusted salmon

The pistachio crusted salmon looked like an abstract painting and was soft and flakey.

This savoury stack had barramundi at the bottom, a layer of steamed broccoli, a layer of salmon and sautéed spinach on top with a side of greens.

The baked breadcrumb rolled pork porterhouse was tasty and served with charred Mediterranean vegetables.

We ended on something sweet with a selection of desserts, we had the chocolate mousse, lemon cheesecake, vanilla pannacotta with berry coulis and the hazelnut parfait.

I heart Maccaroni Osteria Italiana!
