Late night Greek food is what stalactites is known for but they also do a tasty Greek feed all day e’rrday. It’s a Melbourne institution that’s been kickin’ it since 1978. They used to be the only place in town where you could get a tasty meal in the the late night/early hours of the morning. Now there’s other late nighters in the biz but this place is still as popular as ever. We visited at lunchtime so we could give it a more credible, non-inebriated review.
The decor is casual diner-style, with the roof plastered like a cave which is a bit fun.
We started with a big mixed plate of gyros meat and worked around that. The charcoaled lamb and chicken was cooked on the vertical rotisserie and sliced onto our plate. There were all different sized pieces, big juicy bits and crispy charcoaled bits. A good combination of deliciously tender meat.
We ordered a side of chips. They were awesome.
They have some lovely dips. The tzatziki was creamy, garlicky and fresh. Perfect for dipping the pita, dipping the chips and eating with the meat or even by itself, what the hey it's delish.
We got some warm pita bread to dip into the sauce.
Our lunch spread was like an open plate souva so we made some itty bitty souvas with a mix of our dishes.
Stalactites have been around for ages and I’m sure will be around for years to come. Delicious Greek food all hours of the day.
