Shinbashi Yakiniku

I love Japanese BBQ and Shinbashi Yakiniku on Lygon Street is a gorgeous relaxed space where you take your shoes off and sit at the Japanese style tables with a charcoal BBQ fire pit in the centre. You get to cook your own meat which is fun and interactive and means you can have the meat cooked exactly how you like it. They have a range of meats and veg and a good variety of quality wagyu beef including M9+. Not to mention an awesome variety of Japanese beverages. I love the plum wine.

While we were waiting for the grill to heat up we tucked into some takoyaki which are soft, flour-based octopus balls that are deep fried and topped with kewpie, takoyaki sauce and bonito flakes. These were super tasty and got our taste buds ready for our Japanese feast.

For the grill, we started with the premium ox tongue which was sliced thinly. It didn’t need much time on the heat and it was delicious. The meat was soft and silky and we had some sauces to dip it in, there was soy, spicy miso and a spring onion mix.

Cooking over the charcoals.

The tiger prawns were gigantic. We cooked the prawns (put the shrimp on the barbie you could say) and ate those big juicy prawns with charcoal flavour – they were delish.

Cooked just the way we like them.

Vegetables always taste better when they’re roasted over charcoals so they have a range of mushrooms and other veg to choose from. We went for the butter enoki mushrooms. They were served in a pot of chicken soup and butter which enhanced the flavour when the mushrooms cooked down.

The wagyu deluxe trio included wagyu marbled beef, premium wagyu oyster blade and wagyu short rib.

Bite-sized pieces of the short rib were easy to eat and had a lovely flavour.

The premium oyster blade was cut a little thicker and had a good amount of marbling which made it super tender to eat.

And the marbled beef was cut thinly and had lots of fat marbled throughout which made it melt in your mouth once it was cooked. It was presented in the shape of a flower which was super cute.

I heart Shinbashi Yakiniku!
