The humble local chicken shop just got blown out of the water. This is chicken and chips but next level. The team behind the acclaimed restaurants San Telmo and Pastuso have opened a Peruvian style charcoal chicken shop in Fitzroy. They’re serving 48 hour cooked chicken, hand cut chips with house made chicken salt, award winning empanadas and dulce le leche soft serve. Need I say more.

The empanadas were served piping hot and were delicious. The pastry was golden and buttery. There were various flavours, cheese and corn, smoked chicken with peas, smoked beef and traditional beef. They were all mouth-wateringly good. And each serve was topped with salsa for a bit of fresh. They love their empanadas, even the door handle to enter the restaurant was shaped like a big golden empanada. Super cute.

The chefs signature roast chicken roll had big chunks of grilled chicken, a crisp apple, red cabbage & coriander slaw, house pickled cucumbers & fermented chilli sauce. Biting into this Pollo Rollo made me so happy. It was simple but exceptional.

They have some side salads on the menu too. We tried the spicy quinoa salad which was tasty. The quinoa is cooked in almond milk and served with pickled cucumber, crispy kale, broccoli and golden beetroot. Some of the other salads they have are smoked potato salad or pumpkin whipped fetta with roast garlic or iceburg lettuce, parmesan cheese and tomato with vinagarette.

The chicken and chips were insanely good. The free range chicken is marinated in Peruvian spices and dark beer for 48 hours before being roasted over a charcoal grill. The meat was hands down the best charcoal chicken I’ve had and the hand cut chips were crunchy and delicious and sprinkled with house made chicken salt. Love.

We ended on a sweet note with a cup of helados dulce de leche soft serve which was beautifully smooth and had crunchy caramelised roasted macadamias, fresh blueberries and malbec & blueberry jam.

We got Alfajors to take home (mine didn’t make it home I ate it on the way) it was delicious. It’s kind of like a shortbread cookie sandwich filled with a thick dulce de leche caramel. A perfect finish to the night.

Winner winner chicken dinner. This casual Peruvian charcoal chicken shop has seemingly simple food that is executed exceptionally well. Best place for a Peruvian chicken feed.

I heart Che!
