Poke bowls are popping up all over Melbourne and there is good reason why. We are all trying to stick to our new-year resolutions of eating better and living healthier but I definitely cannot commit to the omission of delicious food in my diet. I’ve come up with a solution and decided that poke bowls are the answer. Gotta catch ‘em all. It’s healthy food that is downright delicious.

Mahalo poke opened up a store in Richmond and the pastel pink walls are alluring and energetic. It’s a cute little space with poke bowls flying out the door. Just in case you’ve been reading this and saying to yourself wtf is a poke bowl? It’s essentially a Hawaiian salad with a base, which is usually rice, noodles or the likes of green veg topped with a protein for example salmon or tuna sashimi, chicken, tofu etc. and a bunch of other fresh ingredients and a variety of sauces. You can choose one of the signature bowls or build your own bowl from scratch.

Of course in all this healthiness I managed to order the fried chicken. The chicken was crispy and tender. But in my defence it was still an overall healthy meal. The Mochicko fried chicken signature bowl had lots of good stuff, we had brown rice as the base, pickled chilli, pineapple, ka’ukama, edamame, corn, wasabi mayo & tonkatsu bbq sauce.

The salmon is the most common one going around. This one had a kale base, which is good for the people who don’t eat carbs. And it had big chunks of salmon sashimi, pickled ginger, corn, edamame, ko’ukama, crunchy carrot and purple cabbage, and was dressed with a spicy volcano ponzu and soy tahini sauce.

It’s hard to choose which one to order because they’re all amaze bowls. This one had big chunks of tuna sashimi. You can also order sides to go with your poke bowl like taro chips w chilli salt, edamame and volcano chips sprinkled with furiake.
